Passion, Concern, and Hope... A Community ComesTogether and Gets on The Move
The Launch of California on the Move in Santa Barbara^TM
On November 8th, 2003, the DRC and the City of Santa Barbara officially introduced the community to California on the Move in Santa Barbara^TM. There was great support and enthusiasm for Santa Barbara's affiliation with the national organization, America on the MoveTM. The event was attended by many Santa Barbara area residents, as well as community partners who offered information at their booths on health, nutrition and fitness related issues. The UCSB Women Gauchos, who serve as role models in the community, offered autographed basketballs to children attending the event. The many speakers shared their common goals for a healthier Santa Barbara. Among those who spoke were:

Truly an inspiration to those attending the Kick-Off event was Santa Barbara City Mayor, Marty Blum, who announced that since July, she had been wearing the pedometer given to her by the DRC. She found it to be a useful tool to increase the number of steps she took daily and had been paying more attention to the food she was eating. She told the crowd that not only had she lost weight, but she also felt more energetic and was having fun being on the move. Mayor Blum then shared the number of steps she had walked that moming. With a smile on her face, she told enthused onlookers that she was proud to challenge other mayors in the county to get their cities on the move.

To promote getting children on the move, Superintendent of Santa Barbara City Schools, Debbie Flores, shared her commitment to the initiative and believes such an effort could easily be tied into school programs that enhance healthy lifestyles. She was pleased to see so many schools represented at the event, as the day's cause was one that she cared deeply about: healthy nutrition and fitness. To help Santa Barbara's schools begin "On the Move" programs, the DRC donated pedometers to La Cumbre Middle School, La Colina Junior High School, Goleta Valley Junior High School, Montecito Union School and Notre Dame School.

As the event came to a close, Congresswoman Lois Capps led Santa Barbarans on their first 2000 steps in front of City Hall. The crowd was on the move to the beat of the UCSB Gaucho Band! All had a great time. The event marked an excellent start for California on the Move in Santa Barbara^TM.

Seeking Solutions... A Turning Point for Santa Barbara. "An Idea Whose Time Has Come."
To seek solutions to the rise in incidence of overweight, obesity, and the related chronic health conditions plaguing our community, the DRC hosted a luncheon on September 5th, 2003, that marked a turning point for our county. Here the vision of a "healthier" Santa Barbara was shared. All those in attendance received pedometers and were given the opportunity to hear about the initiative being launched by America on the Move^TM. Speakers from various community sectors passionately voiced their concerns regarding the health of our residents and the hope that we might come together to promote active living and healthy eating in Santa Barbara County, and included the following:

Two local programs receive financial assistance from the DRC:
Partners for Fit Youth is a community coalition to address childhood obesity, whose goals are to promote lifelong wellness and foster obesity prevention for youth. The coalition's School Nutrition Advisory Councils are set up through the Santa Barbara County Health Department, said spokesperson Anne Patterson MPH, RD.

A grant was made to the organization, SPARK (Sports, Play, Active Recreation for Kids) to purchase athletic equipment for a physical fitness training program targeting providers to area lower income children. The equipment will be used after the September 20 demonstration training for ongoing programs in Santa Maria involving non-competitive physical fitness activities for children.

DRC approved a grant for the Sansum-Santa Barbara Medical Foundation Clinic CHAMP Program, "Weight Management for Children". The program was directed at 9 to 12 year olds and their parents, and spanned eight weeks starting in January of 2003. Gail Ward, Health Education Coordinator, was the spokesperson for the program.

The DRC held its first-ever gala fundraiser, "Festival of Hope." The benefit event was held at the Coral Casino, Four Seasons Biltmore, with Larry Crandell presiding over the festivities as only he could. The evening featured several very gifted artists in music and dance.

One hundred eighty people attended the cocktail dinner party honoring Congresswoman Lois Capps and Dr. Lois Jovanovic. These two leaders in the fields of health care and community enrichment are local luminaries who have carried the torch of hope to all those affected by diabetes. The benefit was a resounding success.

This fundraiser was particularly important to our community as Diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions in Santa Barbara County. Of the approximately 33,000 people with diabetes, 22,000 are diagnosed and 11,000 remain undiagnosed. Another 32,000 are considered pre-diabetic which means they meet the conditions to become diabetic and will need to be diagnosed. When diabetes is not controlled, it has serious complications that ravage the body including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, heart disease, kidney failure that leads to dialysis, severe depression, nerve damage, blindness, and amputation of the extremities.

The event helped the DRC raise funds to reach out to the community to provide education about and screening for diabetes. The organization's goal is to help those in need to receive medical attention and nutritional guidance, as well as learn about the benefits of exercise for a healthy life. All support given the DRC is used locally.

"Creative Diabetes Cooking"
Come experience how easy it is to cook meals that you and your family will enjoy-- whether you have diabetes or not. Foods will be prepared that contain adequate protein, fat, and fiber to control blood sugar in proper target zones. The class will discuss healthy and satisfying foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner, whether eating at home or in restaurants. The class is taught by Gerri French RD, MS, and will also cover the latest information on sugar substitutes.

"Cooking and Eating Nutritionally"
Co-sponsored by the DRC and La Casa de la Raza, this bilingual class in healthy cooking and nutrition is offered to individuals wishing to learn more about the food pyramid, low-fat food choices, diabetes prevention and the importance of healthy food choices for both adults and children. The class is taught by Gloria Desales BSN, a nutritional consultant and excellent cook, and will take palce at La Casa de la Raza from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, 12 April for 8 consecutive Fridays.

The DRC, in negotiations with SB Neighborhood Clinics, placed a Certified Diabetes Educator at the Carrillo Clinic, with a Registered Dietician and Psychosocial Counselor to follow.

Nutrition and cooking classes, sponsored at Casa de la Raza and Franklin Elementary School.

June 10th, 2001
Health Fair and screening held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, evaluating 140 individuals. 25 of those screened were identified as at risk, and were referred for further evaluation.

Throughout the month, Earlene deMoulpied and Pamela Beckman Lyon headed a workshop for Santa Barbara City College - Project Omega, entitled "Tending the Elderly Diabetic Soul."

An educational talk by Earlene deMoulpied and Pamela Beckman Lyon was given at the Episcopal Church in Santa Barbara, entitled "Diabetes and the Elderly."

December 2nd, 2000
A support group led by Earlene deMoulpied and Pamela Beckman Lyon was held at the DRC for individuals with diabetes and their families.

On Sunday, November 19th, 2000 the DRC sponsored a Health Fair for the church community at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, located at Sola and Anacapa Streets in downtown Santa Barbara. The event was considered to be a resounding success, according to Meyer Salmoni, Executive Director of the DRC. 140 people were screened for diabetes risk at the event, with fifteen found to be at risk, and referred to their health care providers for further counselling or treatment.
Prior to coming to Our Lady of Sorrows, Father Luis Quihuis had extensive experience in San Francisco involving diabetes programs in the church setting, and is commited to an ongoing screening program at the church,

On Wednesday, October 4th, 2000, from 5:00 to 7:30 PM at La Cumbre Middle School, the DRC hosted its first major event, which Center Director Dr. Michael Fisher described as a "Welcome Back to School Fiesta" featuring healthy Mexican cuisine, music and dancing. Students and their parents were invited, and center volunteers were available to speak with participants about diabetes prevention. Involved members of our coalition attended the affair, as well as other partners of the Healthy Start Coalition.

March 29th, 2000 Carol Henderson Nelson RN, CDE and Martha Wilkins MS, RD, CDE presented a seminar on diabetes management to the Parish Nurses at St. Francis Medical Center.

May 5th, 2000 Martha Wilkins MS, RD, CDE presented an overview of the DRC program and goals to 45 district school nurses at their annual conference at Lake Cachuma.
